Choosing Life: Empowerment, Actions, Results (CLEAR)
An Evidence-Based Practice
Description
Choosing Life: Empowerment., Actions, Results (CLEAR) is a one-on-one intervention for young HIV-positive substance abusers to reduce sexual and substance risk behaviors and improve mental and physical health. The program is made up of eighteen 90 minute sessions with a clinical social worker or licensed therapist in community settings that are divided into three modules: improving physical health, reducing unprotected sex acts and substance use, and reducing emotional distress to increase quality of life. The sessions use lectures, demonstrations, games, and role plays to teach youth about antiretroviral medication adherence, setting daily routines, risk identification, condom use, negotiation of safe sex, and relaxation techniques. Participants are also assisted in establishing long-term life goals.
Goal / Mission
The goal of the CLEAR intervention is to empower HIV-positive youth to reduce risk behaviors and improve mental and physical health.
Results / Accomplishments
Fifteen months following the intervention participants who received the one-on-one CLEAR intervention had significantly greater increases in the proportion of condom-protected sex acts with all sex partners (p < 0.01) and with HIV-seronegative partners (p < 0.05) than a control group who did not receive the intervention. Participants also showed a significantly greater increase in the proportion of sex acts with HIV-seronegative partners than participants in a telephone-delivered intervention (p < 0.01).
