Physician Asthma Care Education (PACE)
An Evidence-Based Practice
Description
The Physician Asthma Care Education (PACE) program is an interactive, multi-media educational seminar to enhance the physician-patient partnership and treatment of asthma. The program improves physician awareness and ability to use the best current therapies and how to communicate effectively with patients. PACE encourages clinicians to self-observe, develop strategies to reach goals, and evaluate their success. The program provides clinicians with educational strategies and tools that increase the patient’s ability to retain and use treatment advice.
Goal / Mission
The goal of Patient Asthma Care Education is to improve asthma health outcomes for children through clinician education and skill building.
Results / Accomplishments
In a controlled trial pediatricians who participated in the PACE program provided clear asthma education and more effective treatment than controls. Patients of PACE-educated physicians had significantly fewer days with symptoms, emergency room visits, and hospitalizations when compared to patients of physicians who had not received programming (p's < 0.05). In addition, physicians were significantly more likely to ask about patient concerns, encourage physical activity, and set goals for successful treatment.
